LESSON PLAN 1

Tactical Problem - Offensively - creating space. Defensively - pressuring ball carrier and anticipating.

Lesson focus

To introduce movement skills, and biomechanical skills ex. base and cuts. Then progress to court and space awareness involving invading or defending territory.

Introduce ourselves: explain our intentions and tactical approach that we will be using. Talk about base relating it to other sports.

Three questions to remember:

1. Base (what about it?)

2. Step towards target when passing.

3.Show target and call for the ball when ready to catch a pass.

Introductory task/game

Bean bag game.

One person has a bean bag with a partner following behind. Start at walking speed... the front person tries to elude their partner, and when they think appropriate, they must do a jump stop (Base) and try to toss the bean bag over their head in order to land on the floor. The following partner tries to catch the bean bag before it hits the ground. Progress to jogging speed.

Cues:

* Keep your head up, watching where you are going.

* Maintain a good balance on the jump stop.

Passing game

Each Player starts on a spot, and receives a pass from the person behind them, they must then pass to the person ahead of them, follow the pass, and when they get to the spot, turn and jump stop to receive the next pass. There will be about six or seven spots that zig-zag down the right hand side of the court (going up and back), and the when the player receives that ball on the last spot, he/she will shoot a lay-up.

Cues:

* Step toward the target when passing, aim at their chest.

* Show a target when ready to receive a pass, and call for ball or use names

Spot On Support - Keep Away

*One defender in the middle tries to deflect or intercept the pass as three players must try to pass to one another along the outside of the grid. They can only move left or right to get open from the spot they start on.

* Progress to catching passes only on the spot. Then to catching on the spot, but must arrive at the same time as the ball.

* Adjust the grid size to make easier or harder.

Questions

What made it easy or harder to make a pass?

What did the defender do to steal or tip the pass?

What would happen if the grid was larger

Culminating Game Activity:  Zone invaders

zone 1                                                                    Zone 2                                                    Zone 3

- 7 defenders, 7 offensive players.                - 4 defenders, 7 offensive players             - 2 defenders, 7 offensive

- 6 passes required.                                        - 6 passes required                                    - 6 passes required

The team that starts with the ball has all of its members, and everybody must touch the ball before they can advance zones.

If there are many students in the class, team can consist of as many as 7 or 8 players. For our class size, we used 7 players per team.

* It starts with 2 defenders in the zone 1, 4 in zone 2, and 7 in zone 3.

* Once they have made all their passes in zone 3, they try to pass to a player in one of three goals.

* Start with no dribbling, maybe progress to one dribble

Wrap-up

What were some difficulties in the game? What did you do to solve it?

Reiterate questions from the beginning of class.

What games did they like?
