LESSON PLAN 3

Warm-up ~ Line Tag ~5 min

3 Man Weave ~ 5 min

Use three lines using the full court starting on the baseline.

- Start with a player with a basketball in the middle line up.

- Pass to either side, then follow your pass, and go around the outside (behind)of the player you passed to.  * this is important for teaching spacing, especially for a fast break when you want to be spread out wide to make it more difficult for the defenders.

* Move the lines closer if it is too far for them.

- Pass the ball back and forth down the court in threes, until one player finishes with a lay-up.

- The next group of three will start when the group in front gets to center.

- Run along the outside of the court on the way back.

- Progress to having the two players that don’t do the lay-up try shots from the corners, then they will pass to the next two after them.

Cues: “Show a target.” “Call for the ball.” “Step towards your pass, follow through.” “Aim at their chest.”

Questioning

Why did we get you to run behind the player you passed to?

What made it easier to pass more accurately?

Skills and Drills ~ Lay-ups - 4 min

-Break down the parts of the lay-up into just the last two steps to start with.

-Start with them at around the second rebounding block (about two steps away from the hoop).

- Start with right hand lay-ups.

- Just a right step, left step, and up.

- Drive right elbow and right knee up together as if connect with a rope.

- Aim at the top right corner of the square on the backboard.

Cues: “Right! Left!

If they are more advanced they can try with a dribble or practice reverse lay-ups.

- Have two lines, a shooting line and rebounding line. Switch lines each time.

Twenty-One ~ Close shooting, rebounding and dribbling. 6-7 min

- Have two lines, with the front player starting at the second rebounding block.

- If they make the shot, they dribble to the other hoop and try to score a lay-up. They must then dribble back and pass to the next player.

- If they miss, but catch the ball before it bounces, they can try another shot for an extra point. But they get just the one extra try.

- If they don’t catch it they must pass it to the next player.

* 2 points for scoring the first shot.

3 points for scoring the lay-up.

1 point for making the extra shot after, catching your rebound.

The first team to 21 wins.

This drill helps the students think about following their shot and rebounding. It also puts emphasis making a lay-up by making it worth the most. It forces them to try to go fast, but in control and slow down and make sure when the perform the lay-up.

Dribbling Pattern ~ 5 min

Using the outside the half court, have the students dribbling to a cone, then stop, back track to steps, cross over and go to the next cone.

- Do the same, and at center court 90 degrees and go top the next cone.

- Cross over with a behind the back, between the legs, or in front dribble.

- When you get to the other side line, cut toward the hoop and shoot a lay-up.

Twenty-One again 6-7 min

End ball ~ 10 min

- 3 dribble max. 5 passes before your team can score etc. Modify rules as you go.

Questioning

- What were the cues we said in the lay-up drill?
