Course Description:
An overview of the teaching of language arts and the development of oral language and literacy in the elementary school. An introduction to strategies for addressing the diverse needs of learners will be included.
Course Objectives:
1) to develop a comprehensive understanding of the British Columbia Ministry of Education curriculum documents for English Language Arts K-7
2) to develop a fuller understanding of the nature and functions of language in a classroom context
3) to enhance understanding of the developmental nature of speaking, reading and writing, and of the many factors that influence oracy and literacy development
4) to develop an understanding of the principles of an integrated language arts and literacy program applied in elementary school classrooms
5) to examine, develop and apply effective and appropriate instructional materials, methods, and activities
6) to examine, develop and apply appropriate assessment strategies for language arts learning
7) to reflect on societal, cultural, and gender issues associated with the teaching of language arts
