Course Description:

This course is designed to provide opportunities for prospective teachers to use their learning of contemporary literacies and creative expression in order to consolidate and articulate their understanding of literacy (their own and their students’) across the curriculum and how literacy impacts their development as a teacher.

Course Objectives:

1) To develop a comprehensive understanding of contemporary literacies and creative expressions as they relate to different contexts and subject areas
2) to re-view and redefine the terms “literacy”, “text”, “reading”
3) to consider ways of using literacy as a tool for integrating subject areas, and for connecting students’ school literacies with their out-of-school literacies
3) to examine the issues of literacy as they relate to socio-economic, socio-cultural, and socio-political aspects of education
4) to further develop a philosophy and an implementation “plan” for teaching practice that enables the interweaving of literacy theories with classroom practices
