Meeting details: Thursdays at 2:30pm in CLE B346. The book I will be reading for the next week is An invitation to Algebraic Geometry, by Karen Smith and co.
Starting on the 4th of May, a group of undergraduates will be meeting weekly as part of an attempt to understand the statement of the Mordell-Lang conjecture (our stepping-stone will be to first understand just the Mordell conjecture – this is quite a bit simpler, and is geometric in nature). Eventually, if there is enough momentum in the seminar, we will also try to sketch its model-theoretic proof. However, the topic will be mainly algebraic geometry, which is is something we don't see much of at UVic even though it's probably among the furthest reaching branches of mathematics. The format I have in mind is nothing too in-depth or technical, just to get an idea of the concepts involved.
If you are interested in joining us, just shoot me an email. The materials we will be working with, as well as the room we will be meeting in, is TBA.
