Any student who is between the ages of 9y and 18y and lives on Vancouver Island is welcome to submit a project to the Vancouver Island Regional Science Fair. You don't need to win a school science fair, or even be enrolled in a Victoria school.

Schools with Science Fairs

Many schools hold their own Science Fairs. Claremont High School even holds 2 every year - one each semester!

These schools then recommend a number of their students to register for the Vancouver Island Regional Science Fair. For organizational reasons we do request notification ahead of time if a school is considering sending more than 15 students to the VIRSF.

Note: We have volunteers available in the Society for the Advancement of Young Scientists who are pleased to help judge at school fairs - just contact us.

Schools without a Science Fair

There are MANY motivated enthusiastic students in our region who do not have the privilege of going to a school which holds its own Science Fair. No problem!

Students can work on their Science Fair projects on their own or in pairs, and enter the VIRSF directly using the link to the forms below.

NOTE: Registration requires a signature from a teacher to verify that (i) that the students did their own work and (ii) that the students followed the safety and ethics rules (See Lauren Hudson's article below).

Distance Learning and Home Schools

Distance Learning and Home School students are particularly welcome to enter the Vancouver Island Regional Science Fair. Many are already doing Project- or Inquiry-Based Learning, and the Science Fair offers them a venue to present and discuss their work with competent and interested grown-ups.

If you are enrolled in a Distance Learning School, please have your Teacher or Learning Consultant sign off on the entry forms. Electronic signatures are fine.

For Home School students, a parent can sign as the teacher in the registration forms to verify that (i) the students did their own work and (ii) the students followed the safety and ethics rules (See Lauren Hudson's article below).

When filling out the application form, you will be asked for grade level. Here's a chart for looking up grade based on age

age 9 - gr 4
age 10 - gr 5
age 11 - gr 6
age 12 - gr 7
age 13 - gr 8
age 14 - gr 9
age 15 - gr 10
age 16 - gr 11
age 17* - gr 12
* may turn 18y in the spring of gr 12 year.
