My research is focused on marine and estuarine palynology with the emphasis on applications of dinoflagellate cysts for environmental and paleoenvironmental reconstructions.

Dinoflagellates are one of the principal components of phytoplankton, responsible for the primary production in marine environments. Many dinoflagellates produce distinctive cysts that are preserved in the sediments, encoding information on the dinoflagellate populations and environmental conditions over time. Analysis of dinoflagellate cyst assemblages found in marine sediments is used to interpret environmental history.

    My research aims to understand:

  • Late Quaternary Climate and Marine Productivity Changes Along the California Margin.
  • Holocene Records of Climate Variability from the Eastern North Pacific.
  • Reconstructions of Marine Primary Productivity, Sea-Surface Temperature and Salinity in the Late Quaternary.
  • Distribution and diversity of modern dinoflagellate cysts in temporal and subtropical waters of the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of Canada and the United States.
  • Development of dinoflagellate cysts as biological indicators of environmental conditions in estuaries to the extent that cyst records can be reliably used to assess environmental change at high-resolution scales.
  • Human impact on coastal waters and the distribution of toxic species.
