Information
Education:
Dipl. Eng. (Civil) National Technical University, Athens, Greece
M.Sc., Ph.D., University of Alberta
Expertise:
- Cold regions hydraulics and hydrology with special focus on river ice breakup and jamming processes, transport of sediment and dispersion of contaminants in ice-laden rivers, and load bearing capacity of floating ice covers
- Impacts of climate change on river ice processes with emphasis on extreme ice-jam events and their socio-economic and ecological consequences
Ongoing Studies/Research Activities:
- Impacts of climate change and flow regulation on the occurrence of ice-jam flooding in northern deltas, a major mechanism of habitat replenishment and ecosystem
- Hydroclimatic studies of ice-jam floods
- Return period analysis and climate trends of extreme flood events in Arctic rivers
- Interaction of extreme ice-jam events with bridges and development of design criteria to ensure structure integrity and minimize potential for ice-jam instigation
- Implementation and calibration of numerical ice-jam models for operation, real-time flood forecasting
