UVic eLearning with WebCT

UVic WebCT Course Policy

WebCT is made up of a collection of web-based, interactive tools for use by faculty and staff at the University of Victoria for instructional purposes. Access to and administration of the system is provided by Computing and System Services (CASS). There is no charge for use of this system at this time.

The WebCT support team at the University of Victoria can be contacted at any time by sending e-mail to webct@uvic.ca. Problems can be reported by phone to the UVic Computer Help Desk at 721-7687. Important announcements about WebCT availability, maintenance and course removal will be distributed through the UVic WebCT Support mailing list.

The WebCT support team must ensure that WebCT use is consistent with the UVic Policy 6030 "Responsible Use of Information Technology Services"; ensure that students and instructional staff have adequate information and support to use the system; ensure that, when problems arise, it is possible to take appropriate action.

  • Ownership and responsibility for course content and communication
    The Primary Designer is the designated owner of a WebCT course and is responsible for all content, other individuals and communication with respect to that course. The individual whose name is entered on the New WebCT Course request form will be assigned the Primary Designer role, unless other explicit instructions are provided to the WebCT support team. The e-mail address given by/for the Primary Designer must be a UVic e-mail address and belong to a real person.

    The Primary Designer of a WebCT course is responsible for:
    • giving Secondary Designer or TA access to other instructors as required AND providing their UVic e-mail addresses to webct@uvic.ca for inclusion on the UVic WebCT Support mailing list;
    • reading and responding when appropriate to all e-mail from WebCT Support and ensuring that all students, TAs and Secondary Designers (as appropriate) are aware of all information distributed through the WebCT Support mailing list;
    • ensuring that the e-mail address for the Primary Designer remains valid. If a permanent e-mail delivery error ("user not found") is received by UVic WebCT support, access to the WebCT course(s) associated with that Primary Designer e-mail address will be terminated (including student access) until the Primary Designer (or Departmental representative) contacts webct@uvic.ca to clarify the situation;
    • authorising students' access to the course;
    • ensuring students, staff and faculty are all aware that they MUST use UVic NetLink ID to access WebCT and UVic e-mail to contact WebCT Support;
    • ensuring students are aware of appropriate online behaviour and that they know how to contact the course instructor in case of difficulty;
    • removing students, TAs or Secondary Designers whose behaviour violates UVic Policy 6030 "Responsible Use of Information Technology Services" or any other UVic Policy;
    • providing first line assistance to students, TAs and Secondary Designers;
    • contacting WebCT Support on behalf of students, TAs and Secondary Designers when issues cannot be resolved otherwise;
    • keeping an archive of all course content at the end of the course in a location off the WebCT server;
    • ensuring all use of student data in a WebCT course conforms to guidelines documented on the Human Research Ethics Board web site.
