What are the system requirements for Let's Face It!?

Operating System:

Let’s Face It! was designed to run on both Microsoft Windows and Macintosh. For best results we recommend Microsoft Windows XP or later for Windows or Mac OSX 10.1 or later for Macintosh. We have had reports of problems installing and playing Let’s Face It! on both Microsoft Windows 98 and Millennium. The problems encountered with Windows 98 are minimal and usually easy to work around; however, we advise against running Let’s Face It! on Microsoft Millennium all together.

Disk Space:

  • Let’s Face It! requires approximately 665 MB (megabytes) of space to run on your computer.
  • During installation you will require an additional 500 MB of space on your computer (on top of the 665 MB required to run Let’s Face It!). This is required to unzip the install files. So, in order to install Let’s Face It! you will need a total of approximately 1.2 GB (gigabytes) of free space.

Display Requirements:

You will need to have at least 24-bit color display and 1024 by 768 pixel screen resolution. If you want check or change the color display and screen resolution see I got an error asking me to set my screen to 24-bit or higher and then the game quit. What should I do? and My monitor seems too small to play the games. What should I do? respectively.

How do I get Let's Face It!?

To get Let's Face It! you need to navigate to the downloads page of the Let's Face It! website, then do the following:

  • Complete the download request form, specifying your Name, Address, Email, and that you agree to the Terms of Service.
  • You should receive an email confirmation (sent to the email you specified in the submission form) that your submission has been processed. This email will contain a User Name, Password, and link to the LFI! downloads page. Navigate to the link.
  • When prompted, enter your User Name and Password into the security toolbar to gain access to the LFI! downloads. (No login prompt?)
  • On the download page, click the link corresponding to the correct version of the LFI! download (ie. Windows or Macintosh) to download the compressed LFI! package.
    • Depending on the speed of your internet connection this may take anywhere from a minute to an hour.
  • Once the download has completed, your operating system may or may not automatically attempt to decompress the file. If it does not, double-click the compressed file you just downloaded, and your default expander program should attempt to decompress the file. If you do not have an expander program, numerous programs are available for free download on the internet. WinZip (Windows), and Stuffit Expander (Macintosh) are two common ones.
  • After the compressed file has been expanded, there should be an "LFI" folder located in the same directory as the compressed file. Let's Face It! is now installed.

When I went to the download page I didn't get prompted to login. All I saw was an error page saying "The page cannot be displayed". What should I do?

There are several possible reasons why you might be running into this problem:

  1. Make sure you are going to the right address:
    • Ensure that you follow the link specified in the confirmation email and that no characters are wrong/missing in the address bar of the browser.
  2. If you still are not prompted to login, you should ensure that your internet browser is enabled to view FTP folders:
    • If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer
      • Open your internet browser.
      • Open the Tools menu on the browser tool bar.
      • Click on Internet options… (Tools -> Internet Options…). This will open the Internet Options dialog
      • There will be a number of tabs along the top of the Internet Options dialog. Click the Advanced tab.
      • Find the Enable FTP folder view of FTP sites option and ensure it is selected.
      • Click OK
      • You may have to close all your open internet browsers before the changes can be applied.
    • If you are using an internet browser other that Microsoft Internet Explorer:
      • Please review your browser’s documentation to ensure that it is enabled to view FTP sites.
      • If your internet browser is incapable of viewing FTP sites we recommend downloading and installing FireFox.
  3. If you are still not prompted to login, then a firewall might be blocking you from viewing an FTP folder.
    • There are two possible resolutions to this:
      1. Ensure that your internet browser uses passive FTP:
        • If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer:
          1. Open your internet browser.
          2. Open the Tools menu on the tool bar.
          3. Click on Internet Options… (Tools -> Internet Options…). This will open the Internet Options dialog.
          4. There will be a number of tabs along the top of the Internet Options dialog. Select the Advanced tab.
          5. Find the Use Passive FTP (for firewall and DSL modem compatibility) option and ensure it is selected.
          6. Click OK.
          7. You may have to close all your open internet browsers before the changes can be applied.
        • If you are using an internet browser other that Microsoft Internet Explorer please review your browser’s documentation to ensure that it uses passive FTP.
      2. If you are still not prompted to login, you may have to disable or modify your firewall. Do to this you will have to have access to your firewall, so if your are behind an external firewall you may not be able to modify or disable it. Please review your firewall's documentation to disable or modify it.
        • NOTE: Disabling your firewall may leave your computer open to attack from the internet. Only try this option if nothing else has worked.
  4. If you are still not prompted to login then your internet browser may be trying to log you in anonymously. As you are required to provide a login name and password anonymous login won’t work. To disable anonymous login:
    • Please review your internet browser's documentation to determine if you can turn off anonymous login to FTP sites.
  5. If you are still not prompted to login then the FTP server might be down or too busy to let you log in. Try waiting for a while and downloading again later. If problems persist, please contact the Let’s Face It! team at: lfi at uvic dot ca

When I started the game I didn't get to enter my name. What should I do?
This is a know issue we are currently trying to resolve. Occasionally when you start Let's Face It!, it will skip over the login screen. If this occurs, quit the game and start it again. It should allow you to enter your name, but if problems persist please contact the Let’s Face It! team at: lfi at uvic dot ca

I get an error 'File D_INFO.txt is missing from the application path – Let’s Face It! will not startup' and then the game quit. What should I do?

Let’s Face It! requires the file D_INFO.txt in order to start. If this file was moved to a folder other than LFI, move it back to its original location in the LFI folder (usually in 'C:\Program Files' but it may be elsewhere if you installed to a different location) and the game should start.

If D_INFO.txt was deleted you will need to reinstall Let’s Face It! (see How do I reinstall Let’s Face IT!?).

Another reason for this error has to do with computer account restrictions. You will not be able to play Let’s Face It! from a limited account. To resolve this, either play the game from an already existing Administrator account or make the limited account you wish to play the game from an Administrator account (to do this please consult your operating system’s documentation).

Log Files
What are log files?
Log files record information during game play. They are used by tutors and our research team to determine which games players are good at, which games players are having difficulties with, how players are progressing etc… They are a priceless resource to the tutors and research team in guiding the intervention and future game development.

Where do I find the log files?
The game log files can be found in the data folder. The data folder is located in the LFI folder (usually in 'C:\Program Files' but it may be elsewhere if you installed to a different location).

What do I do with the log files?

If you are a parent you can probably just ignore the log files. However, if you have been instructed to send the log files to the Let’s Face It! team:

  1. Open your email program (Outlook, Hotmail, etc…)
  2. Compose a new email, addressed to the LFI! Team: lfi at uvic dot ca
  3. Somewhere in the subject include the child’s name
  4. Attach each of the log files in the data folder
    • The data folder is located in the LFI directory.
    • The LFI folder is usually in 'C:\Program Files' but it may be elsewhere if you installed to a different location.
    • Depending on your email program you might be able to attach all the log files at once, or you may have to attach each of the files individually.
    • If you do not know how to attach files to an email, please consult your email program’s documentation.
  5. Finally, send off the email.

What do log file's names mean?
A log file’s name contains the a shorthand version of the game's name as well as the player’s name. This allows tutors and researchers to determine who was playing which game. Please do not alter the names of the log files.

Sometimes the log files are not created or updated when I play a game. What should I do?

Game logging will not take place if the data folder is not present in the LFI folder. To check this:

  1. Navigate to the LFI folder (usually in 'C:\Program Files' unless a different folder was specified during installation).
  2. If you do not see a data folder in the LFI folder you need to create it.
    1. Create a new folder (right-click or command-click an empty area of the file browser, move the mouse over the New option and click Folder, New -> Folder).
    2. Rename the folder
      1. Right click the folder. You should be presented with a number of options.
      2. Select Rename
      3. Set the folders name to data.
      4. Press Enter.
  3. Start Let’s Face It! and play a game.
  4. After you quit, there should be a log file for the game you just played in the data folder.

On occasion game logging does not start properly even when the data folder is present. Try playing for more than one level as logging sometimes only starts on the second level.
