Germanic and Slavic Studies : Program Requirements
The MA streams in Germanic Studies and Slavic Studies consists of a minimum of 15 units of graduate credit:
1.
GMST 501 or SLST 501 (1.5);
2.
GMST 502 or SLST 502 (1.5);
3.
at least 6 units of course work, 3 of which may be drawn from courses in Germanic Studies at the senior undergraduate level;

In exceptional circumstances, a candidate may be allowed to take 3 units of course work, 1.5 of which may be drawn from courses in Germanic or Slavic Studies at the senior undergraduate level, and write a thesis (minimum of 100 pages) worth 9 units. For this, the permission of both the Graduate Adviser and the Chair must be obtained.
All courses, except GMST 501/SLST 501 (Introduction to the Disciplines of Germanic and Slavic Studies), GMST 502/SLST 502 (Theory and Practice), and GMST 580 (Introduction to Holocaust Studies) are variable in content and may be taken more than once, with departmental permission. At the end of GMST 501/SLST 501, students are expected to submit a Thesis Proposal that will allow them to start work on their Thesis (GMST 599/SLST 599).
