Comparisons of Inequality

In Spanish, place más (more) or menos (less) before the adjective, adverb or noun, and que (than) after it to form a comparison of inequality. In English, this form is often created by adding -er to words such as tall + er = taller.

EXAMPLES:


  • José es más alto que Mario.
       Jose is taller than Mario.
  • Marta tiene más gatos que Julio.
       Marta has more cats than Julio.


  • Attention:
    All adjectives have to agree in gender and number with the noun they modify.

  • María es más delgada que Rosa.
       María is thinner than Rosa.


  • Attention:
    Before any numerical amount más de is used instead of más que.


  • Hay más de cinco cervezas.
       There are more than five beers.
  • Yo tengo más de cien años.
       I am over 100 years old.
