This course serves for many students as an
introduction to the field of Ethnomusicology as well as to
Cuban music and culture.
We will study Cuba's folkloric, popular and religious music, all of
which are inter-related.
Because Cuba's history and culture are so
varied, we must also examine Spain, Europe, and
West Africa in order to understand Cuba.
In addition, we survey the
profound and far-reaching influence that
Cuba has had on popular music around the world.
Finally, we examine
the recent political and social history of Cuba, to
try to understand exactly where the culture is today and where it
is headed.
