Activity #1 – Obstacle Course

            Duration: 5-7 minutes.

Purpose:  To warm-up lower extremities of athlete and prepare them for various fitness blasts, sprinting or jumping.

            Organization:

- Students will be grouped into 4 groups of 9, groups A,B,C,D.

- Each student of each group will be numbered 1 through 9.

- Students will then run around perimeter of obstacle course marked by pylons, they must always travel in a counter clockwise direction.

-   When their number is called they will have to race around the remainder of the perimeter until they hit the starting gate (also marked by pylons).

-   They will then enter through the starting gate and complete the course and exit through the finish gate.

-   Once they have completed the course they will continue to jog around perimeter.

-   Numbers will be called by the instructor.  Instructor must also ensure that all numbers are called.

-   This activity can be made into a competitive situation. Which would create a more social atmosphere, as the students would be placed in a team situation.

-   The model below will demonstrate the tasks involved in the obstacle course.

-Students enter through pylons, hop on one foot through hoops, jump over benches side to side, then finish off by performing, a shuttle run with the bean bags, and exit out the designated pylons.

- This warm-up was designed for 36 students.

-   As already stated, emphasis was on the lower extremities.  The goal was to increase the student’s heart rates in preparation for the upcoming lesson.

-   In order to get the students motivated the command style was selected.

-   Following the obstacle course activity we had a short PNF stretch, done in partners.  This was done from head to toe.  Each partner is to take his or her turn leading their partner through 2 stretches at a time.

-   The purpose of the stretching is to warm-up muscles and ensures maximum range of motion.

Activity #2 – Various tag games

            Duration: 5 minutes.

Purpose: To Warm-up both lower and upper extremities to prepare for the following lesson which could include track and field or any other activity emphasizing leg power.

            Organization:

- All students will be put into groups of 3.

- The groups will proceed to play tag in the 1 of the basketball courts that we were assigned.  Each member of the groups will have a number (1,2,3) the instructor will call out numbers to designate who begins as “it”.

- Next, each group of 3 will join another group of 3. If there ends up being odd numbered groups it will not be a problem.

- Groups will then lock wrists or hold hands and create a line formation.

- Students are now allowed to roam around the entire 2/3 of the gym we were assigned.

- To begin, the person in the front of the line must try to tag the person in the back of that line, without breaking the link.  Must travel forward at all times.

- If a tag is made the person that was tagged goes to the front to become “it”.

- Next, designate one group of 6 as “it”.  The person in the back of this line must try and tag the person at the back of the other lines.  Again all movement must be forward.

- When a new line is tagged that line becomes “it” and the same rules apply.

The group tag game will have a very good social aspect to it because communication will be necessary to make it possible for the lines of students to travel in an efficient manner.

- Either of the Tag games will also exercise the students cognitively.  They will need to think how to position themselves to avoid being tagged as well as how to position themselves to tag people if they are the individual or group designated as “it”.

- This warm-up can also be related to the “games” section of the I.R.P. ex: “capture the flag.
