LESSON PLAN DAY 1
 
Unit: Gymnastics
Lesson: 1
Grade: 8
Topic: Introduction to Unit, Safety, Balancing, Major gymnastic position
Equipment: Gymnastics mats, TV, VCR machine
Learning Objectives:  Students will be able to:
1. Understand the concepts of safety with equipment and be able to demonstrate knowlegde when asked to
2. Understand the main points of balancing and center of gravity
3. Demonstrate the different major gymnastics postions

Introductory Activities (10 minutes)
- Video Activity (introduction to unit)
- Safety in the gymnastics unit

Warm-Up (5 minutes)
-Knee Slap tag

Introductory Activity:
- Students write down as many gymnastics skill as they see on the video
- Emphasize that the students won't know all the skills

Skill Development

Balancing (10 minutes)
- Patches and Points Activity
- Questioning: What made balancing easy/hard?

Gymnastics positions (10 minutes)
- Tuck position
- Straddle position
- Pike position
- V-sit

Balancing
- Individual Activity
- On mats
- Wide base, low center of gravity

Gymnastics positions
Tuck Position 
 -Sitting on mat, knees to chest 
-Arms around knees 

Straddle Position 
-Sitting on mat, legs are wide and tight 
-Arms in same position 
-Back straigh, head up, toes pointed 

Pike Position 
-Sitting on mat, legs staight out in front and tight 
-Arms stright out 
-Back straight, head up and toes pointed 

 V-Sit 
-Sitting on mat 
-Legs and arms are in a V
-position, toes are pointed

Culminating Activity (15 minutes)
- Trust Games
-Students pick a partner that is relatively the same size
- Students number themselves 1 or 2
- Activity  is performed on the mat
- Safety and trust have to be emphasized
Closure (5 minutes)
-Review

Topic: Falling and landings
Equipment: Gymnastics mats
Learning Objectives:  Students will be able to
1. Demonstrate all the falling and landing techniques in class
2. Understand the concept of falling and landing and be able to tell the teacher these concepts

Introductory Activities(10 minutes)
- Safey quiz 
- Introduction to falls and landings

Warm Up(5 minutes)
- Stack it up relay

Warm-up:
- Class is split into five teams
Skill Development
Falling (10 minutes)
- Forward
- Backward

Landings (5 minutes)
 

Falling
Forward 
- Standing on knees, with arms out and hands pointing slightly in 
-Fall forward 
-Finger tips contact first, then hands and then bend arms to increase time and contact of fall 

Backward 
-Standing on feet, crouched into a ball with hand reaching backward 
-Fall Backwards with hands reaching back to contact mat first 
-Hands contact mat, lower back and arms, then shoulders 

 Landings 
-Feet shoulder width apart 
-Knees bent 
-Arms out infront

Culminating Activities (15 minutes)
-Balancing and Falling Activity
- Crazy Flight Good Landing

- Students are in partners, partner A goes first and partner B is the observer
- Task Cards are handed out and then handed
