LESSON PLAN #1

Unit: Badminton                   Grade: 11            Duration/Class: 45 minutes
               
Theme: Introduction to badminton

Equipment: 30 racquets, 30 shuttles, nets, 30 small cones

Learning Outcomes: TSWBAT will accomplish the following: understand the basic rules and principles of badminton, begin their goal setting for the unit, understand what the journal assignment entails, be able to grip a badminton racquet correctly, be able to perform two ready positions, and be able to perform the overhead clear with a moderate amount of success (moderate meaning that the students can demonstrate the proper technique and hit the shuttle consistently)

Introductory Activities
1.    Show badminton cartoons
2.    Give students handout of terms and rules – encourage them to refer to the handouts throughout the unit as it will help them with the final quiz and their understanding of game play skills and strategies
3.    Give students handout for Goal Setting and explain the journal assignment that the students will hand in at the end of the unit

Warm Up
4.   Shuttlecock Keep-up
v    Have students sit in a semi-circle so that you can see them and they can see you
v    Position them so their backs are turned away from any distractions
v    Make sure to ask if there are any questions regarding the goal setting or the journal assignment

v    Class divided into pairs; if extra person then make a group of 3 and modify cones for game to include 3 sides
v    Partners number themselves 1 and 2; #1 finds a space in the gym and #2 gets two cones and a shuttle
v    Students progress task on teacher’s cue

Skill/Concept Development
1.    Introduce/review (for some students) the forehand and backhand grip.  Students follow – Command Style
2.    Grips #3 – each student plays keep-up alternating between a forehand and a backhand grip
3.    Grips #4 – in pairs, students play a game of keep-up





4.    Introduce/review the basic ready position, attack stance, and center court base.  Students follow – Command Style
5.    Ready Position #3 – from a jog, on teacher’s cue students run to half way between designated area and assume cued stance and hold until teacher says to go



6.    Introduce overhead clears – students observe demo and then go and practice (without shuttle) individually
7.    Other #2 (Reciprocal Style Task Sheet) – one partner feeds another shuttle and offers feedback on performance
8.    Lead-up Games #1 (Keep-up Game) – students use overhead clears and try to keep shuttle in the air for as many consecutive hits as possible
 v    #1s grab racquets and a shuttle, and then #2s (both on teacher command)
v    Have students stand in front of the teacher semi-circle so that teacher can see them and they can see you
v    Position them so their backs are turned away from any distractions
v    When in pairs, use the same groupings as for the warm up

v    Students perform tasks with racquets
v    Designate 2 lines as boundaries
v    Half way between the lines becomes Center Court Base
v    Teacher “holds” students and does a quick scan to ensure that stances are correct

v    Ensure students know what proper spacing is before they go on their own to practice (ensure safety)
v    Provide Reciprocal Teaching Checklist
v    Continue with same partners
v    Maximum 2 groups per full court

Culminating Activity
1.    Other #3 (Mini-Game) – modified game; two pairs per court, compete against each other – 2 groups see who can keep the shuttle in the air for the longest duration using the overhead clear.  Each time a group drops the shuttle the other group gets a point.  Play to five.

2.    Get students to help take down the nets and put away equipment

2.    Ensure that students understand the goal setting activity and the journal assignment that they must complete by the end of the unit.  Ask if there are any questions.

v    Teacher calls out following commands: forehand grip, backhand grip, basic ready position, attack stance, and overhead clear

2.    Review ready positions, and center court base
3.    Review overhead clear
4.    Rally game – partners attempt to keep shuttle in play and must return to ready position at center court base after each shot played – rally for as long as possible
5.    Introduction to forehand and backhand drives – students practice movement Command Style
6.    In partners, one partner feeds the other partner 10 forehand drives, then 10 backhand drives, then partners switch spots
7.    Lead-up game #1 (Keep-up Game) – partners attempt to keep the shuttle up for as long as possible using the forehand and the backhand drive; continue to try to improve on scores
8.    Practice time – 10 minutes to practice any skill taught so far               
- make sure students know to record practice activities


v    students paired up in new groupings and numbered 1 and 2
v    #1 gets two racquets and #2 gets two shuttles on teacher’s cue, then return to area
v    Students in area where teacher can see them and vice versa; students faced away from any distractions
v    Review major teaching points from each of the skills
v    Ask students if they have any questions
v    Students paired in new groups for rally game
v    Have students placed on one side of one court so that every one can see
v    Demonstrate forehand and backhand drives
v    Students remain with same partners to practice task

2.    Other #4 (Points Variation Game) – in same partners, singles game with normal rules except for scoring.
Scoring – one point for a regularly scored point, 2 points for scoring using either a backhand or forehand drive, and 4 points if player is able to drop the shuttle behind his/her opponent using a forehand clear to score.
May modify scoring system for one partner to make competition more even.

v    Ideally one court per pair, but can play half-court singles badminton with a maximum of 2 pairs per court
