GOAL SETTING

At the beginning of the badminton unit demonstrations of the individual skills involved will be given.  Students will have the opportunity to attempt to use these skills in game play and fun accuracy tests.  At the end of that session, students will be given a goal setting sheet where they will be able to set personal goals for their individual skill development.  By doing some base testing and allowing students to play early in the unit will give them a chance to see what areas they need to improve.  At the end of the unit we would retest the same criteria and allow students to compare their results.  This would not be an evaluation tool it would simply be in place to give students an opportunity to monitor their own progress.

Each student would be given the following sheet:

SELF-CHECK STYLE CRITERIA SHEET

Task: Serve (short)

Description of task: students will practice short serves from the front of their serving box into the front of opposing serving box.  They will assess their own performance based on the criteria outlined on their task sheet.  A hula-hoop target will be used to more easily assess accuracy.

Criteria to observe:

Task description
Skill
Cues
Common Errors
Swing -
Forehand
Underhand swing with racquet head below handle
Follow through up across body

Backhand

Body position –
Foot opposite swinging arm forward
Shoulders and hips perpendicular to the net

After contact -
Birdie trajectory in low arc
Just clears top of netAccuracy to target
Serve
Swing mechanics

Racquet held low in front of body
Wrist snap for swing

Body mechanics

Path of shot

Fluid motion with wrist snap at contact

More difficult than forehand serve
Should only be used when forehand serve is developed

Turn body sideways to the net – perpendicular

Aim to have birdie pass within one foot of the top of net

Racquet head too high
Stopping swing with no follow through

Difficulties with accuracy

Feet are side by side
Opposite arm is down
Torso is facing net

Trajectory is too high over net
Trajectory is too low into the net

SAMPLE PRACTICE STYLE TASK SHEET

Name ___________

Task: Net Shots

Students are to complete the tasks below and check off when each task is completed (each partner must fill out his/her own).  Comments should be made regarding the success or enjoyment (or lack of) for each task.  Students should be able to successfully play at least 15 out of the 20 shots before moving on to another task.  This is the type of practice that students should participate in to increase their proficiency at any skill covered in the unit.  Students are encouraged to use the practice time each day to practice these skills, and remember, DOCUMENT IT IN YOUR LOG.

RECIPROCAL STYLE CRITERIA SHEET

Task: Drop shot

Description of task: observing partner tosses birdies to the doer who attempts to drop it from their own backcourt into the front corners of opposing court.  Hula-hoops will be placed in the front corners of opposing court to act as targets for the doer.  Observer will toss 15 birdies to the doer, the doer will attempt to drop the birds into the targets alternating sides each time.  Tosses must be high to allow the doer full arm extension during swing.  After each shot, the observer will offer feedback to the doer based on the criteria listed below.

SAMPLE STATIONS

Name________
Date_________

Badminton Station Day

Students will be placed in groups and work at assigned stations to perform tasks assigned for station.  Group will move clockwise to next station on teacher’s cue (which will be every so many minutes, depending on time allowed).  Students should document work at stations in their logbook.

Station #1

Overhead Clear Rally
v    In partners (or groups of three to make numbers work out, with two partners playing on side of the court) players attempt to keep the shuttle in play using overhead clears as many shots in a row as possible
v    After rally ends, players begin again and attempt to beat previous best

Station #2

Task 2: 15 forehand drives
Task 3: 15 backhand drives

Station #3

Task 1: 15 long serves
Task 2: 15 short serves (forehand or backhand)
v    Simultaneously with Task 1 and 2, non-serving partner will practice serve returns

Station #4

Task 1: 15 forehand net shots
Task 2: 15 backhand net shots

Station #5

Rally game
v    Students play each other in singles game
v    To gain a point the player must hit either a smash or a drop shot into marked target areas of the opponent’s court
v    Target areas can be made smaller or larger (on one opponent’s side of the court) to ensure relatively even competition between players
