Drills for Serving

Drill #1  Doubles short serve

Demonstrate the forehand and backhand serves
Then in pairs with 10 birdies per pair share a court with another group
Students will face diagonally on the court with their partner
The partner without the birdies will lay the head of their racket on the corner of the mid line and short serve line.
The student with the bird will attempt to hit the head of the racket with their serve
The students will each try forehand and backhand techniques

If you have the resources at hand you could put a string above the net that the students could attempt to put the birdie between
Drill #2  Doubles long serve

Demonstrate the forehand long serve
Then in pairs with 10 birdies per pair share a court with another group
Students will face diagonally on the court with their partner
The partner without the birdies will stand at the back of the court
The student with the bird will attempt to land the birdie between the long service line and the end line
The students will each try this several times trying to hit the corners of the service court
Drill # 3  Serve and Return

Students will serve ten times to their partner using any service style they want
The student receiving the serve will be in the ready position and attempt to return the serves
There will be four people on the court so the only returns that count, are the ones that land on your partners side
To extend this game you can add in a third shot
This should show the students the result of a good serve, which is a defensive shot having to be played by their opponent, giving them a chance to be on the attack from the start of the rally.
