Warm-up Activities

Birdie Keep Up
Equipment: 15 birdies, and 30 rackets

-Students will get into pairs with a racket each and a bird.
-Each pair will stand in their own singles serve quadrant.
Object of the game: To keep the bird in the air while alternatively hitting it in the quadrant.
-
Variations:  Make it more difficult for your partner by placing shots into the corners
-Extend more by making a rule that states that you must go outside the quadrant before you hit the bird.
-Simplify by setting a minimum height the bird must be it to (i.e.: above the head)
Tactics: After hitting the bird you should get opposite your partner and be in a ready position on your toes.
-Attempt to get below the bird while using a low base.
-Hit the bird higher when you are working together to keep the bird up
Bean Bag Toss Game

-Each student will find a partner of the opposite sex and will line up on the basketball base line
-With one participant running backwards pass the bean bag back and forth until you reach the opposite baseline
Object of the game: The object of the game is to pass the beanbag without dropping it between the two baselines.
Variations: Increase speed of activity (walking, jogging, running)
-Increase or decrease the length of the toss
-Throw the beanbag to the sides so that the students is forced to move laterally as well
Tactics: Keep a low base of support as that you can move laterally if necessary
-Stay on your toes to increase mobility
-Keep your head up so that you can see the beanbag when it is thrown
Castle Game 
Equipment: 15 cones, 15 tennis Balls

-Students will pair up and find their own singles serve quadrant
-Each pair will have one tennis ball and a cone in the middle of the quadrant
Objective of the game: The objective of the game is to hit the cone in the middle of the grid with the ball.  While taking alternating shots at the cone.
Variations: To simplify students should begin by catching the ball and throwing it at the cone
-Implement a rule on the height of the bounce (i.e.: must bounce above the knees)
-To extend students can bat the ball with there hands
Tactics:  Keep a low base of support and stay light on your toes
-Eyes on the ball at all times
-Judge when the ball is going to land and get there early
Line Tag
Equipment: 30 Pinnies

-Find a partner you have not yet been with in this class
-Begin on any line on the gymnasium floor with the pinnie tucked into your shorts.
Objective of the game: To avoid having your pinnie taken by your partner.
Variations: You can vary the speed at which the students may go (walking jogging running)
Tactics: Keep your head up
-Use quick movements (i.e.: fake to go to one line and make a quick direction change to a different line)
-Be aware of the other groups around you
Balance Relay
Equipment:10 rackets and 10 birdies

-Students will begin by getting into groups of 3
-Each group will have one racket and a birdie
-Students will place the birdie on the racket and run to a cone and back balancing it
-When they within 5 meters of the line they will perform a doubles short sever to the next person in line
Object of the game: To get to the cone and back without dropping the birdie, and to perform a proper doubles serve
Variations: You can begin with walking and progress to running and maybe a race
Tactics: The students should be concentrating so they can see where they are going and not drop the bird
-Students should make controlled movements so they do not drop the birdie
Card Circuit Training
Equipment: 1 deck of cards, 4 station labels (hearts, diamonds, spades, and clubs)

-All the cards will be laid out in the middle of the gym face down
-Each stations will have a choice of three levels for each activity
-The four different activities are: shuttle run, squat jumps, lunges, and birdie keep up with a racket
-To start each student will pick a card and they have go to the station on their card and perform that activity the number of times on the card (all face card are worth 11)
-When they have completed that activity they will run back to the centre and pick another card
-Object of the game: Is to do complete the skills to the best of their ability
Variations: Students will have a choice on the level of task they perform
Knee slap game

-In pairs students will find an open area in the gym and stand facing each other 2 meters apart
Object of the Game: Is to slap your partners knee as often as possible while avoiding having your knees slapped
Variations: You can have the students play with one hand behind their back
-Defensive player can only use one hand or no hands to protect their knees
Tactics: Use a low base of support and stay on your toes to increase mobility
-Use fakes to try to catch your partner off guard
-Attempt to anticipate your partners moves
Ship game

-Label the four wall of the gym port, starboard, bow and stern
-Mark safe zones 5 meter from the walls
-4 players will begin in the middle of the gym as people that are “it”
-The rest of the class will begin in the port safe zone
Object of the game: When the teacher calls out a location to go the students must try to get there without being tagged by the people in the middle.
Variations: The students in the middle have to link arms with a partner and try and tag people
-There can be an activity for students to do when they reach the location
Tactics: Spatial awareness is very important so to avoid being tagged and collisions
-Stay mobile ready to move in any direction
Badminton Golf
Equipment: 30 rackets, 30 birdies

-Students will pair up and play virtual golf with a racket and birdie
-The 1st hole is a predetermined object, line, and area, as chosen by the pair
-The person that wins the hole choose the next location
-The biggest concern is safety make sure the entire gym is being used and that nobody hits while in a crowded area
Object of the game: To get the birdie the hole in as few strokes as possible
Variations: The pair can decide what difficulty level they want by where they place the hole
-You must take all your strokes using a certain type of shot
Tactics: Concentrate on using fluid technique while contacting the birdie
Reaction Game
Equipment:  15 Bean bags

-Students will in pairs with one beanbag
Object of the game: Is to stay close enough to your partner, so when the teacher calls throw you can catch the beanbag
Variations: Begin with walking and progress to running
-Can only use none dominant hand
-Adjust the height of the throw
Tactics: The offensive student can try to use quick direction changes to loose their partner
-The defensive player should be on their toes and ready to change direction quickly
Badminton tag
Equipment: none

Play as in regular tag, but avoid getting tagged you must yell a badminton term which allows you to be in a free zone for 5 seconds
Object of the game: To avoid getting tagged by stating a term which is used in the world of badminton
Variations: Begin with walking and progress to running
-Start with one person "it" and gradually increase the number of people that are "it"
-To extend or simpilfy you can change the amount of time you are in the free zone as well as decrease space of play
Tactics: stay low
-use split step to fake out "the tagger"
Birdie catch
Equipment: 30 birdies

Each student will begin with a birdie
Students will then move around the gym looking for people to extange the birdie with, by way of a toss
Object of the game: Is to extange the birdie as often as you can in the time provided
Variations:  Have the students only using their non dominent hand
-Begin with walking and progress to running
Tactics: Stay low
Head up to see potential passing partners and avoid colitions
