COGNITIVE MATTER

CHIPPING

  • How can you chip for consistency?
  • How can you chip for placement?

 

Preparation:
  • Stance / Body Position
  • Grip on club and angle of club
  • Use quiet hands to help produce the right distance
  • Eliminate wrist action

Back-Swing:

  • Length of back swing
  • Pendulum motion using shoulders

Force Production:

  • Weight transfer onto front foot
  • Square contact of ball with club face
  • Speed of club as it contacts the ball

Follow Through:

  • Finish off the pendulum motion
  • Hands should be ahead of club head on follow through
 

 

  • Think about what surface you're hitting off 

 

  • Think about your target (the hole or a safe next shot)

 

  • Think about which club you will use for your shot and how will you have to hit it to get the optimum ball trajectory and spin

 

  • Think about golf etiquette (divots, pace etc.)

 

Putting

  • How can you put consistently?
  • How can you ensure good putt placement
Preparation:
  • Stance
  • Grip on club
 

Back-Swing:

  • Length of back-swing
  • Swing club straight back
  • Pendulum

Force Production:

  • Contact between ball and club
  • Speed of club

Follow Through:

  • Pendulum
  • Follow through straight through ball

 

  • Think about your alignment

 

  • Think about the ball position

 

  • Think about the breaks in the green and your position on the green

 

  • Think about the proper etiquette when putting (pulling the pin when on the green, replacing divots etc.)

 

  • Think about your shot strategy

 

  • Think about the weather conditions and how they might affect your shot
Bunker Play

  • How can you get out of the bunker consistently?
  • How can you place your shots out of the bunker?
Preparation:
  • Stance
  • Grip on club
  • Club Face angle

Back-Swing:

  • Length of back-swing
  • Shifting of weight

Force Production:

  • Striking of sand behind ball
  • Speed of club

Follow Through:

  • Acceleration through the ball
  • Follow through at least equal to length of back-swing
  • Shifting of weight to front foot
  • Think about the lie of your ball

  • Think about the proper etiquette for bunker play (rake the pit after you've made your shot)
Long Iron Play

  • How can you hit your long irons consistently?
  • How can you get good placement using your long irons?

  • Hitting ball with Sweet spot of club
  • Speed of club

Driving

  • How can you drive consistently?
  • How can you place your drives where you want them to go?

Force Production:

  • Hitting ball with Sweet spot of club
  • Speed of club

Follow Through:

  • Acceleration through the ball
  • Shifting of weight to front foot

  • Think about possible obstacles on route to hole

 

  • Think about the weather conditions

 

  • Think about etiquette of golf when driving (calling 'fore', letting others play through if your group is going slow etc.)
