Lesson:  1

Topic: Introduction, Putting

Learning Outcomes:  Students will understand the rules, terms and history of golf.  Students will be able to demonstrate proper grip technique and proper putting swing.  The students will also be able to judge how to vary the weight of their swing to accommodate different distances.

Handout: Rules, terms, history, and scoring of golf.

Equipment:

-         one ball per student

-         one putter per student

-         one task sheet per pair

-         benches and gym mats to make golf course

Introductory Activities/Warm-Up

  • One Behind

 

 

  • Teacher has music playing
  • Students spread themselves out in gym so that they can see the teacher
  • Teacher performs an activity, when s/he switches to the next one the students copy the first one, and the game continues
  • Only limited by your imagination!

Skill Development-Concept

 

·        Safety precautions

·        Practice grip with partner using task sheets

·        Practice swing with partner using task sheets

·        Practice judging weight of swing with partner

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

·        Students get themselves into pairs, each pair has one putter and one golf ball

·        Each partner practices their grip and swing techniques according to the pictures on the task sheets while the other partner evaluates and gives them advice as per the pictures, checking each step off as it is attained

·        Each pair is given a target which they can place wherever they wish and they practice changing the weight of their swing in order to hit the target

Culminating Activity

 

  • The Putting Challenge

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  • The teacher sets up 9 mini holes of golf that are no longer than a putting distance
  • The students move around the holes in groups of two or three keeping track of their own scores
  • If time permits the students can change around their groups and play another 9 holes
