Four Corner Passing Game

Tactical Problem: Maintaining possession of the ball
Skill development: Passing the ball using the in-step of the foot, and moving to an open space to receive a pass

Teaching Points:

Tactic

  • Passing away from the defender to keep possession
  • Pass fakes
  • Moving the ball as quickly as possible
  • Leading teammates appropriately with passes

Skill

  • Moving to an open space to receive the ball
  • In-step pass
  • Faking
  • On-the-ball and off the ball communication

_______= Ball being passed

Organizational Points:
  • Groups of 4 per grid, 3 offensive players one at each corner of the grid, with one cone open and 1 defender in the middle of the grid
  • Offensive players must run to an open cone and receive a pass at that open cone

Simplifications:

  • Have defender play passive defense
  • Increase the size of the grid so passers have much greater area to pass in and easier to pass the ball by the defender

Extensions:

  • Defender plays live defense
  • Defender must get 1 touch on the ball to become a passer
  • Defender must gain possession of the ball to become a passer
  • Decrease the size of the grid
  • Have passers only allowed two touches of the ball when receiving therefore increasing the speed of passing
