Shooting
Jump Shot and Lay-ups

Fundamentals of a Jump Shot:

-feet approximately shoulder width apart
-bend knees
-place shooting-hand foot slightly forward
-keep shoulders square to the hoop
-focus eyes on the back of the rim
-right handed shooters place their left hand on the side of the ball (support) and the right hand behind the
 ball
-keep shooting elbow in and at 90 degrees
-cock wrist
-follow through (arm straight and "hand in the cookie jar")

Fundamentals of a Lay-up (for right handed persons):

-Angle of approach to the basket should be at approximately a 45 degree angle

Foot work:
-plant with the right foot
-then step with the left
-then drive right knee upward while jumping off left leg

Ball work:
-place right hand on top and slightly behind the ball
-bring ball upward over head, following the driving motion of the right knee (as thought they are attached
 by a rope)
-aim towards top corner of square on backboard
-follow through

*teachers should choose what they believe are three of the most important skill cues when teaching
 their lesson.
