Mini-Volleyball

Tactical Problem: Necessity of setting the ball high. Accurate passing to set up the attack.  Attacking to space in order to score.
Skill development: Accurate forearm passing to a target.  Setter opens up and sets to target. A good set, four feet above net height. Putting ball into open space on opposite court.

Teaching Points:
Tactic:
  • Space: defensive and offensive positioning
  • Force: applied to the ball to increase or decrease time ball is in the air.
  • Distance: placing the ball in an open/weak area (ie. deep or short)
Skill:

Setter skills: review volleying technique.

  • Hands high at forehead.
  • Hand position: look through window (see lesson 2).
  • Square to the target.
  • Finish like superman (extend arms and legs).
Passer skills: forearm pass (See Lesson 1)

Defensive Skills:

  • Move to fill open spaces.
  • Anticipate where the attack will go and move to the ball.

Organizational Points:
  • 3 verses 3 players
  • Using 1/2 of a badminton/volleyball court depending on class size.
  • Teams find a court and opponent to play.
  • One player gets ball while others decide on who will serve first (paper, rock, scissors).
  • Rule #1: Must have three hits.
  • Rule #2: Must use regular volleyball rules.
Decide:
  • Number of points to win.
  • Whether to have mini-tournament (King's Court)
  • Modifications for winning/losing team (ie. shorten court for losing team)
Extension:
  • Increase/decrease number of players, depending on skill or gym size.
  • To simplify, shorten court size or add one-bounce rule.
