Rainbow Set

Tactical Problem: Necessity of setting the ball high.
Skill development: Accurate forearm passing to a target.  Setter opens up and sets to target. A good set, four feet above net height.

Teaching Points:
Tactic:
  • Open up and set the ball with a high arc to a target.
  • Setting up to receive the pass, face target when passing.
Skill:

Setter skills: review volleying technique.

  • Hands high at forehead.
  • Hand position: look through window (see lesson 2).
  • Square to the target.
  • Finish like superman (extend arms and legs).

Organizational Points:
  • Groups of three.
  • One player gets ball, other two find space on 1/4 of a court.
  • In triad formation complete two to three good passes before rotating.
  • Ball does not travel over the net (no competition).
  • Begin with a free ball from tosser on your side of the net to the passer, who passes to setter who then sets to target.
  • All players use overhead pass for everypass, focusing on a high arc.
