Lesson 3: Applied Blocking

 

Administration

1.  Divide class into groups of 2; students number themselves 1 or 2

2.  1's will get ball while 2's find space along the net.

 

Focus:  Focus on the proper take off and blocking movement

Rules

  • One partner tosses the ball at the approximate height that a ball would be attacked from
  • The other partner will jump up to the ball and use the blocking technique to push the ball down towards the floor on the side of the net that the ball was thrown from
  • Each person will perform 6 jumps and then switch

Teaching Points:

  • Proper take off (swing arms back, start low and explode up)
  • Maximum height during the jump is essential to effectively perform the skill
  • Shoulders lifted to gain maximum height
  • Arms fully extended during block
