Concept Development Activity

Lesson 3: Attacking and Blocking

Administration

  • Groups of 4 -- tosser (setter), hitter, blocker, receiver
  • If a there are any extra people a group of 5 will work, the extra player will rotate in for the receiver, to the position of tosser

Focus:  Focus on accurate attacks and reading the play in order to accomplish an effective block

Rules

  • Tosser throws up to attacker
  • Attacker hits the ball
  • Blocker performs either a passive/moderate/aggressive block
  • Receiver collects ball
  • All positions rotate:  Tosseràhitteràblockeràreceiveràetc.

Teaching Points:

Teaching Points (blocking):

  • Watch the movement of the ball rather than the player before the attack
  • Time the block with the attackers jump
  • After making the block it is important to get in a position ready to make a pass

Teaching Points (hitting):

  • Hit for accuracy over power
  • Identify open space to hit to on other side of court before hitting the ball
  • Make contact with ball slightly ahead of your body, with arm fully extended
  • Concentrate on run up that you are comfortable withàR/L/Up with both.

Progressions:

  • Passive blocking; i.e. standing with arms fully extended, allowing the hitter to make contact without pressure.  Everyone’s first couple of hits are to be standing, concentrate on making good contact and placing the ball.
  • Jump attacks and jump blocks,
    • blockers jump straight up placing increased pressure on the hitter but still allowing them to hit
  • Jump attacks with aggressive blocks; blocker tries to stop the hitter from scoring a point

Phases of an attack.
