Concept Development Activity

Lesson 4: Basic Attack

Administration

1.  Divide class into groups of 3, numbering themselves 1,2, and 3

2.  1's will get ball while 2's and 3's find space along the net.

Focus:  Focus on the proper lead-up, take off, and swing

Rules

  • One partner (in setter position) tosses the ball at the approximate height that a ball would be set at
  • The attacker will perform the lead-up, take off, and swing to attack the ball
  • The third person is on the other side of the net retrieving the ball
  • Each player will perform 5 hits and then rotate

Teaching Points:

  • Proper lead-up is L-R-L (if right handed, if left handed do the opposite)
  • Proper take off (swing arms back, start low and explode up)
  • Maximum height during the jump is essential to effectively perform the skill
  • Shoulders lifted to gain maximum height
  • Striking arm is fully extended when contacting the ball
  • Contact ball slightly ahead of your head

Progressions:

  • Can have the attacker toss the ball to the setter and they set the ball for the attack
  • The ball receiver can attempt to dig the ball up after the attack
  • If the receiver can control the ball they can even pass the ball back over the net
