Concept Development Activity

Lesson 4: Attack and Block

Administration

1.  Divide class into groups of 4, numbering themselves 1,2,3,and 4

2.  1's will get ball while 2's, 3's, and 4,s find a space along the net

Focus:  Focus on putting the set, attack, block, and cover together

Rules

  • There will be a tosser/attacker and setter on one side of the net and a blocker and digger on the other side of the net
  • Tosser tosses ball to the setter who sets the ball for the tosser to attack
  • Attacker should think about the different ways they can hit the ball to evade the blocker (kill, pokey, down-ball)
  • The blocker will attempt to block the ball while the digger covers the open space and attempts to dig up any balls that get by the blocker
  • If the digger does get the ball they will attempt to pass it to the blocker and then move in for an attack
  • Both people on one side of the net will attack 5 balls and then the sides switch from offense to defense and vice versa

Teaching Points:

Teaching Points (blocking):

  • Watch the movement of the ball rather than the player before the attack
  • Time the block with the attackers jump
  • After making the block it is important to get in a position ready to make a pass

Teaching Points (hitting):

  • Hit for accuracy over power
  • Identify open space to hit to on other side of court before hitting the ball
  • Make contact with ball slightly ahead of your body, with arm fully extended
  • Concentrate on run up that you are comfortable withàR/L/Up with both
