3 vs. 3 Task Outline

Tactical Problem:  being able to move into space and anticipate a hit, pass or volley, also being able to hit, pass or volley into open space on the opponents side.
Skill development:  Set-up for an attack, passing to a target (setter), setter setting to attacker, attacker spiking the ball, opponent blocking, spiking into space, movment into space

Teaching Points:     Tactic
  • attack by passing, volleying or hitting the ball into space on opponents side
  • moving into space and anticipating where the ball will go
  • guarding space
  • preventing the ball from entering one's side (blocking)
                               Skill
  • triad formation, passer-setter-attacker
  • passing - feet shoulder width apart and staggered
  • no arm swing, flat surface, head up and drive with legs
  • setter opens up to attacker makes window above forehead
  • fingers relaxed, cushion ball, then drive arms upwards extending fingers
  • atttacker uses proper approach. right handed, left-right-left.  Left handed right-left-right
  • jump, pull back bow, direction hand, arm swing, snap wrist for downwards direction
  • emphasis on placement and accuracy

Organizational Points:
  • 3 vs. 3 is culminating game for each lesson, each game will have different rules depending on that days lesson
  • lesson 1 - passing only (no volleying, spiking,blocking)
  • lesson 2 - set for attack (passer,setter,attacker) pass-set-volley (no spiking, blocking)
  • lesson 3 - spiking - pass-set-spike (no blocking)
  • lesson 4 - blocking - pass- set- spike (blocking)
  • split students into groups of three
  • play begins with toss to opponents side
  • groups who struggle can add a bounce before the pass and set
  • continuous play, point system is different in each lesson
