Tactical Problem:  Using forearm and overhead passes within modified game play
Skill development:  Accurate forearm and overhead passes

Teaching Points:
 

Tactic 

  • Communication and working together with teammates
  • Quick movement to ensure being square to target and being set early
  • Sending accurate passes to teammates and passes into open space to elude opponent
Skill 
  • Athletic position (feet shoulder width apart and keep low)
  • Square to target
  • Accurate overhead and forearm passes

Organizational Points: 
  • Divide students into groups of three
  • Mark opposing squares on court using four cones about 15 x 15 feet in size (as shown on the diagram above)
  • Students will play 3 v 3 within the boundaries of the squares
  • Students will have a maximum of three hits per side and must hit ball over the net within the boundaries of their opponents square without the opponent being able to return it
  • This game will use a rally point system of scoring
  • Play starts and restarts using underhand serves within boundaries of squares
  • Depending on numbers four or two players could be on a team depending on skill levels

Guided discovery questions:

Q:  How were you able to elude opponent to score points?
A:  By placing shots close to top of net and into open space.
