Managerial Routines and Organizational Strategies
Equipment:
-
the appropriate number of volleyballs are placed in hoops
spaced apart on the gym floor
-
equipment is handed out after the activity has been explained
whenever possible
-
extra volleyballs are immediately put away in the equipment
room, as is the case when students go from groups of two to groups of four
but only need one volleyball
-
cones for gridwork are set up before class
-
when cones need to be moved students are told to collect
them and put them away
Space:
-
students are spaced out by using the lines of the courts
or cones
-
while small groups are possible for some drills, because
of limited space some drills require larger groupings
Groupings:
-
students are allowed to form their own groups but they
must look around and make sure no one is left out
-
upon forming groups students number themselves (1,2,3,4
depending on the size of the group) and each number is assigned a specific
task (i.e. number one put the extra ball away, number two put the cones
away, number three and four find an empty space).
Speaking To the Class:
-
students should be brought into the same spot (i.e. the
center of the gym) everytime so they become accustomed to the routine and
the lesson flows more quickly
-
the teacher should face any distractions (i.e. another
class sharing the gym or sunlight) so that students can listen unimpeded
-
for brief instructions the teacher should stand in the
same spot each time and stand so his/her back is not to the students
Observing the Class:
-
the teacher should walk around the perimeter of the playing
surface (gym or field) making sure that he/she gets to all students (this
may take more than one drill but each time the teacher stops to explain
something he/she should start from the place where he/she left off)
-
feedback should be positive and specific (i.e. Johnny,
it great how you make a flat platform each time you forearm pass!)
Classroom Rules:
-
classroom rules that were already in place include:
-
ask for permission to go to the washroom
-
put up your hand to answer questions
-
no chewing gum in class
-
rules that we added are:
-
make sure all students are included in the activity (don't
leave anyone out)
-
freeze when you hear the whistle and wait for instructions
