Lesson Plan:Lacrosse

Class: PE 9 (Girls)                                                 Class Length: 70 min

Topic: Movement into space                                Lesson 1 of 8

Unit Goal:   To introduce students to the game of Lacrosse and to use a variety of games and drills which will present common tactical problems associated with the game.  For students to be proficient in the use of a stick to pass and receive a ball with accuracy, to maintain possession of the ball using the technique of cradling, and to execute off the ball skills such as moving into open space successfully in game-like situations.

Intended Learning Outcomes (TSWBAT):

-Become familiar with use of the lacrosse stick including proper grip

-Identify movement into space as a tactical problem

-Demonstrate ways that a player can create and move into space

Prerequisites:

-None required although any previous experience in school or in the community will be helpful

Equipment Needed:

-30 lacrosse sticks

-12 balls

-12 beanbags

-15 pinnies

-30 cones

-2 hula hoops

Lesson Breakdown:

(5 min.)

Time to get changed and move outside

Administrative details: attendance, announcements

(15 min.)

Warm-up:

     1. Leave ‘em Standing      Everyone needs a stick

     2.Stick to stick

-Every has a stick at their feet, when the teacher blows the whistle

everyone has to move in a specific way (run/hop/skip) and touch a specified

                  number of sticks.

(15 min.)

Modified 'Dodgeball':     Aim:  Students move into space to receive pass, also to

                                                      avoid being tagged

Set-up: Need groups of 3, 1 beanbag per group and 4 cones

*Have them split into groups and number themselves 1-3 (all 1's raise hands, etc)

*Have 1 get a beanbag, 2 get cones and 3 find a space on the field

-Set up grid, explain with a demonstration check for understanding

-Start with players walking, progress to jogging

(10 min.)

Pass to the open cone:    Aim:  Students practice moving into space to receive a pass,

unobstructed. Use of a beanbag/ball instead of a stick

so the focus is on the off-the-ball movements

     Set up: Use same grids

    *Form new groups

-Use a new group to demonstrate  check for understanding

-Start with bean bag, progress to lacrosse ball  (may move to sticks, depends on

     class behaviour, skill set)

-As they figure out the drill, have them count consecutive passes, use names

(15 min.)

End-ball Game:    Aim: Use a modified game which focuses on moving into space to

get open for a pass as well as restricting space for

                                       opponents.

Score by moving ball down field to opponents end zone and

                                       passing to goal taker.

Set up: Make grids long and narrow

*Need groups of 7 per grid  (1 player at each end line, 3 on 2 in the grid)

*Line up and number off, if players left over have coach and rotate in

    *One team use pinnies

-Use one group to demonstrate  check for understanding

    -Use lacrosse ball only

-Make grids narrower, restrict space to put more emphasis on need to create space

*May introduce use of sticks, (slow game down to walking for safety)

-Switch teams to give new opponents, also look for a group to use as an example

(5 min.)

Review, Check for learning:

-Review aim of lesson, provide feedback

-Q. With End-ball game what was more difficult -wide or narrow court?

                     Why?

Collect equipment, move inside, time to change.

Notes/Reflection:

Lesson 2:   Continue to work on efficient use of space and introduce students to use of lacrosse sticks for passing and catching.
