Lesson 2: Dribbling and Ball Control
Lesson 2: Dribbling and Ball Control
Skill/Concept development tasks/games
First, a brief explanation of the types of dribbling and what to keep in mind while dribbling the ball (keep your head up, keep the ball close to you and on the side of your body, and keep the stick face angled slightly down) was given.
Two passing drills:
-Students were split into two lines, facing each other, about fifteen feet apart. Everyone had stick but only one ball was given per group of two lines. The first person in one line would pass to the first person in the line ahead of them and run to the back of that line. Once the passed was received, the net person would do the same.
4 corners dribbling drill:
The students were split into four lines for the second passing drill. All four lines were facing into a middle square box (approx. 20’ diameter), standing ten feet away and each line facing a different side of the box. The students were to dribble in to the cone on the nearest left corner of the box, and turn left around the cone (90 deg.) and continue to dribble to the next line to leave the ball at the feet of the first person in that line. Once the drill was understood, two balls were placed in the group and eventually a defender in the middle box.
Diagram:
Change of Direction Drills
The students were given an explanation and a short demonstration of the different ways to change the direction of dribbling (Sideways pull, Indian Dribble, Pull Back)
-The students then lined up along the end line and dribbled toward the teacher watching for a cue then would alert them to change their direction either left, right, or back, using all three types of direction changes
-The students then lined up and dribble around cones placed in two lines ahead of them. The placement of the cones forced them to dribble left to a cone, go around the cone (using a change of direction), and dribble to the cone in the right line.
Game and culminating activity:
The students were split up into four teams chosen by the instructor based on knowledge of previous classes and the students’ abilities and played games for the final twenty minutes of class with an emphasis on the skills learned so far.
Sideways Pull
Indian Dribble
Pull Back
Tactical Problem – controlling the ball to keep possession and attack opponents’ space
Lesson focus: Dribbling and Ball Control
Skill objective: To teach the students the various ways to dribble.
Introductory task/game
Ball Tag
-Within one large box, the students ran around, avoiding the two students with pinnies on
-The students with pinnies were to pass a ball back and forth and tag the others when they had the ball. However, the students with pinnies were only able to move their legs if they did not have the ball.
-Once the students became more familiar with the game, more students were given pinnies until the last students was tagged
Knock Away
-Within a large box, the students were each given a stick and a ball and were to dribble their ball throughout the box while attempting to knock the other students’ balls out of the box (and simultaneously protecting their own ball).
