Game play and modification DEFINITIONS

1. Game Play Content

2. Game teaching conditions

These are simple ways to extend or simplify games for all students in a class

S - Space

T - Time

E - Equipment

P - Players

3. the step principle

Technique Practice

- Practice a motor skill within a closed environment to allow the learner to focus upon the technique without too much variability in the execution of the skill.

Drill

- A task in a dynamic environment that helps develop and/or highlight a tactical problem and/or skill.

Task Progression

- Learning a specific skill through a steady incremental progression.  The technique or tactic is learned in the most simple form in simplified drills or games and ends with the most complex form that can be transferred to the full game

Game Representation

- A mini game that has the key features and tactical problems of the adult game.  The game is modified to suit the student’s physical, cognitive, and social development. For example, mini tennis in the service boxes using a sponge ball

Game Exaggeration

- A modified game that uses exaggeration to emphasize the importance of a certain tactical aspect of a game (but still represents the same tactical problems and solutions of a full game).  For example, 1 vs 1 badminton on a half court - exaggerates the importance of drop shots and clearing shots.

Game Adaptation

- A modified game that increases the challenge of a successful player based on the outcome of the previous game.  Changes can be made in relation to space, scoring, rules, or players.  This provides the opportunity for students at all skill levels to play against each other, as the more skilled player will be more challenged, while the less skill player has more opportunity to succeed as a result of the modifications.

Technique

- A motor skill that has a focus on biomechanics that is practiced in a simplified context

Skill

- A specific task or movement performed within a practice or game situation.  It is integral to the playing of the game and requires technique.

Strategies

- A cognitive expression that uses on the ball and off the ball movements (skills) with the intention of improving the chances of success.

Tactics

- dynamic application of strategies in a game situation in order to gain an advantage over an opponent or opponents
