About Michael Loomer

Upon graduating high school, I had a very definitive plan for my life and where that plan would take me.  Needless to say, I am know nowhere near where I thought I would be, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.  I began university in Biochemistry, before moving on to Biology and Spanish.  None of these truly peaked my interest and at school I was merely a lifeless vessel, who took information in during lectures and spewed it out on tests.  I really didn’t learn, or at least retain, much information from my first two years in university.  During that time I got more involved in coaching tennis, a job I had had since the age of 15, but never one I had considered all that important.  The more often I began to coach and care about coaching, the more joy and satisfaction it brought me.  I not only looked to further my coaching education, but also began to explore teaching by going back to my old elementary school and volunteering.  I had finally found something that I was good at, enjoyed and could do as a career.  As someone who had always enjoyed physical activity and sport and was interested in human biology, I decided to move into The School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education at UVic and got accepted into their Secondary Education program.  Since joining the program, I have had the privilege of meeting teachers and students who have the same like-minded goal of influencing the next generation of students to lead healthy and active lifestyles.  Furthermore, as a teacher I have the ability and opportunity to positively influence the lives of many others through learning, while always being in an environment of learning for myself.  I am interested in pursuing a Masters in either Curriculum Development or Instructional Strategies, as well as furthering my coaching education and possibly working towards helping teach teachers.
