K - 3 THEMES
Travelling Refinement
1. See how many ways you can travel on. Change body parts; into different body parts.
open
spaces
2. Apply to wide/narrow benches , ladders. Vary directions - forward,
sideways,
backwards
3. Travel in, out, around hula hoops changing
body parts touching the
floor.
4. Apply the idea of symmetrical and asymmetrical
shapes while travelling.
Weight on Hands Refinement
1. Hold the bench and kick feet off the ground knees bent then straight, keeping them close to the
feet return to where they started. ground.
2. Repeat on floor. hands
flat, fingers pointing forward; keep feet low to ground.
3. Repeat but try to switch feet in the air and land one foot in front of the other for takeoff, land on other foot.
on the other
4. Try kicking feet into the air and have them land twist body so feet land in a close to
one hand; gradually increase
different spot height
of feet in air
5. Try to go over low pieces of equipment taking
weight on hands. keep feet
low to equipment to start, gradually increase height of feet
6. Combine a roll, into taking weight on hands
with feet landing in a
different spot, into another
roll
Rolling Refinement
1. Use the log roll to go from one side of your mat keep
body stretched
to the other
2. Repeat using the side roll hands
and knees, roll onto
side
of thigh and outside of arm
3. Combine two different rolls. make
transitions smooth
4. Try to perform a forward roll to travel across the mat weight on flat hands
and feet,
chin tucked to chest,
push with feet, back of neck
touches the mat first, stay tucked small
5. Combine your best roll with taking weight on control
roll into taking hands first without equipment then going on weight
on hands small equipment.
6. Perform back safety/shoulder roll. start
crouched with
back to mat, rock back, extend arms to
side, bring both
knees
to one shoulder, roll onto shoulder.
7. Put a sequence of rolls together that emphasize
changes in direction.
8. Combine with a jump and landing varing landing
sideways, facing, back, facing
the mat.
Balancing Refinement
1. Explore balancing on different numbers of 3, 1, 2, 4, etc.
body parts.
2. Explore balances on different numbers of narrow body parts and
points and patches large, flat body parts; start
low
level, curled, wide base
3. Apply balances to low equipment. vary body shapes - twist,
curl,
stretch;
4. Combine a roll into a balance or balance then
roll make transitions smooth
5. Hold a balance position and slowly move into
another balance with a different
body shape.
6. Think about both sides of your body making the
same shape while balancing; try to
make both sides
of the body make different shapes.
Jumping Refinement
1. In a space on the floor, jump as high as you bend down; use arms; land
can and land softly. toe,
ball, heel, bend knees.
2. Combine with travelling onto and jump from soft landings on feet, in control;
increase height
the equipment.
3. On the floor can you combine a jump, landing
with a favorite roll?
SEQUENCE DEVELOPMENT
• as soon as two
skills or ideas have been learned begin to put them together into a sequence.
• start
with individual sequences in K and Grade 1 but begin letting students work with
partners matching movements. Matching
means doing the same thing at the same time as your partner (side by side
facing same/different directions; apart facing each other, meet and part; start
together, move apart then back together).
• sequence
work can start on mats and then do them with small and large equipment.
•
sequences can be designed that emphasize certain themes (eg. contrasting levels
while moving, balancing, rolling; or changes in speed; or changes in
direction); then concepts can be
combined to make sequences more complex.
LESSON #1
TRAVELLING
ON/OFF EQUIPMENT AND BALANCING
Equipment: benches with a long mat beside it
Warm-Up: Have mats scattered on floor, on signal move into
spaces around the mat. Gradually
increase speed and direction of movement.
Learning Experience Refinement
1. Find a way to

5. Try one of your
balances on a piece of
equipment.
Culminating Sequence:
Find one way to travel along the bench, balance with one
patch, then climb down and find a different way to travel back on the mat.
LESSON #2
ADD
ROLLING
Equipment: Same as last day
Warm-Up: Run and jump over the corners of the mats. You can't touch any of the mats.
Learning Experience Refinement
1. Review balances
from last day. hold
position for 3 sec.
2. Practice moving

3. On your mat,
practice making your arms
outstretched,
body long and thin then roll from one toes pointed
end of your mat to the other. Reverse
back to start.
4. Combine a balance
and a log roll. smooth combination
5. Travel along the
bench other than
in a forward direction, dismount, and
use a log roll to return to the start.
Culminating Sequence:
Travel along the bench showing a change of direction,
balance at the end of the bench (specify points/patches), and log roll back on
the mats.
LESSON #3
ADD WEIGHT
ON HANDS
Equipment: add small platforms and foam shapes
Warm-Up: same as last day
Movement Experiences Refinement
1. Find a place on
the floor away from fingers
pointing
mats and equipment, place hands on the forward,
feet apart,
floor and kick one foot up in the air feet
return to take-off spot
2. Repeat but using
a bench or platform strong arms
to hold onto. Feet
must come back to the
start position.
3. With hands on
either side of a line, try keep feet low to the
to have feet on one side of the line, kick up ground
and have feet land on the other side of
the line.
4. Repeat #3 but add
a log roll after
landing.
5. Repeat #3 using a
bench feet must be higher to clear the
bench
Culminating Sequence:
Take weight back and forth across a line, travel along the
bench with a change in direction, grasp bench and kick legs to land on the mat
and use a log roll to travel back to the start.

2. Do sequences in
groups of three/four.
3. In partners, one
person make a shape, the
other partner go over/through the shape.
4. Repeat #2 having
a platform to assist with
flight.
5. The partner who
is making the shape use
a piece of equipment, other partner find ways
to go over/through.
6. With your
partner, develop a sequence where
you have different matching relationships. Keep
the sequence simple.
BALANCING REFINEMENT
1. In partners,
explore different platform using
a partner as a platform upon which to

4. Explore
counter-balances in partners partner
balances pushing together
5. Select 4 or 5
balances and tie them together
with roll, taking weight on hands etc.
6. In partners,
combine 2 individual balances
with a partner balance.
Think of ways to link
the balances.
SEQUENCE DEVELOPMENT
1. Get the older students working in partner
relationships early duplicating movements and small sequences. Then add people slowly.
2. Place the equipment so that if students are
in stations/groups there is something to do going out and coming back to the
start. Should have everyone active.
3. Once a movement vocabulary is developed let
students have more freedom in selecting sequences.

EDUCATIONAL GYMNASTICS
TIPS TO REMEMBER
• Space
out equipment for safe use
• Teach
activities on floor then introduce small and large equipment
• Expect
safe, quality movement
•
Incorporate limitation and problem solving styles of teaching.
•
Gradually add concepts/activities to increase the complexity of the sequences.
• Share
the criteria with students that you will use to assess their work
•
Encourage and reward students to 'make sequences their own'
• Share
sequences through demonstrations
• Combine
mats and equipment in 'non-90 degree' ways
