Lesson Intent:

Keeping the ball going and guarding space.

Set-up of Gym:  
Gym space in three badminton courts.

Introductory Activity

Warm-up - free play with a ball.

Height for time concept - 
“Which is easier to catch?”

Individually keeping the ball going.  Forearm pass - “Arms as a piece of wood”

 

 

MAIN BODY OF THE LESSON -
Skill/Concept Development

 

TASK 1 - Game Play (TGfU idea) - Conceptual Understanding
Application game: 
Castle game introduced by Paul

  • Castle student demo - Rules One bounce, must go above head, try to hit the castle

  • Castle game 2 girls responding to Paul’s feedback.  Height for time.  Aim high above your head.

  • Castle game 3.  Tim demo with student re-positioning after hit. 

  • “After you hit the ball where should you go?”

  • Castle game 4.  Tim working with pair of low-skill boys to re-positioning -  “If you are hitting here where do you want to go?”

  • Skill - Getting low to the ball.  Two girls, one Penny.  Nice and Low to the Ball.  Beneath ball to control.

 

TASK 2 - SKILL REFINEMENT - Positioning idea and off-the-ball movement

  • Skill - Alex and Tim Side step Mirroring each other.  Opposite space. Management for pairs side-stepping - “Footwork drill - Number yourselves One and Two.  Ones put your hands up.”

  •  Class side-stepping with feedback from Tim - Pushing off the outside foot

  • Space Opposite your partner - Pretend going to throw.  Student demon.

  • Face the space - Feedback - Management “That’s it Christopher.”

  • Application game.  Push-off, aim for target “Aim for the target, if you hit it and your partner does not catch it then you get a point. Always be in line.”

CULMINATING ACTIVITY - Game play leading into court play

  • Keep Up game. Tim explains game played in a quadrant. Rules. Play inside the area. Server throws up above head height then we start. “Where did you go after you hit the ball?” Convergent style

  • Two girls playing keep-up game in corner of gym - Management use of space. Others students playing.

  • Two girls playing keep up game - One girl hits to space. Teacher voice encouraging and student’s name.

  • Tim asking students ‘Why would hit the ball before it bounced - surprise, reduce time.” Use of space, nice platform. Students making their partners move.

CLOSURE -

How should we hit the ball? Where should we hit the ball? Where should we go after hitting the ball?
