Task design and skill development

Bump and Bounce (hover over boxes below)

Task "In your own space, keep the ball going above head height after one bounce using a forearm pass."

Simplifications not appropriate unless rule of one bounce removed then the student might need to catch the ball between a combination of hits, or use a lighter ball. Potential body refinements could widen base, keep hands glasped together firmly, keep arms straight and rise into pass with body - less arm swing. Keep ball high for time, get set early and let ball drop to arms. Anticipate where ball will land and prepare early with knees bent. Depending on application game different extensions. Student ready to hit ball twice of more before bounce. Partner to alternate passes with. A target to arm ball at could be added. A keep-up game with a partner, Castle game with a bounce or space to keep the ball in with a bounce could be possible games. Focus on sending ball to a space and covering space would be helpful tactical ideas. A task worded for the development ability of the students. For younger children the basic task usually involves each of the body, space, effort and relationship movement concepts. Task design elicits multiple responses from the students within the focus of the skill.
