ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES
& TEACHNIG STYLES
It is our goal that all students will enjoy this wrestling unit and have the opportunity to be successful. Instead of just assessing them based on if they win/lose matches, we will use a variety of assessment tools that will take into account cognitive, psychomotor, and affective learning. In accordance with this, we will also use a variety of teaching styles that best fit the objective we are trying to accomplish.
What and how assessment will be undertaken in all three domains:
Cognitive: |
Students
will be assessed on their understanding of wrestling tactics, concepts,
terminology, know-how, and rules. This may be demonstrated throughout
the unit through instructor questions and answers or written at the
end of the unit. |
Psychomotor: |
Students
will be assessed on performance through both instructor and peer observation.
The main emphasis will be on skill selection and execution. Improvement
and overall performance will be considered. |
Affective: |
Students
will be assessed on their willingness to participate (wrestling, set-up,
take-down, proper gym strip, etc.), their interaction with other students,
attendance, and their overall attitude. |
An effective form of assessment that encourages learning is the GPAI (Game Performance Assessment Inventory). It has students working in groups of three or four (two wrestling and one or two assessing) and giving feedback to each other. This causes a greater learning/understanding for both. An example of a GPAI for wrestling would be:
|
Skill Execution (Did they perform the skill safely and effectively?) |
|
---|---|---|
Mark with a if
the student met the criteria.
Mark with an X
if the student didn’t meet criteria.

Teaching Styles
Command Style - This is an effective form of teaching when trying to accomplish efficient use of time, teacher control, and group synchronization. This is a great way to instruct wrestling when the instructor is introducing several new techniques/tactics in a fairly short amount of time while still trying to keep control of the class and make sure that everyone is participating safely.
Practice Style - This is a great way for students to work independently, learn and practice leadership, make decisions for themselves, and provide the instructor time to give individual feedback. This type of teaching works well in wrestling when students are practicing different skills either alone or in groups.
Reciprocal Style - This approach allows
students to learn by giving and receiving effective feedback. It also improves
social skills, gives students more independence, and improves learning due to
frequency and immediacy of feedback. It is a great style to use in a wrestling
unit when students are working in pairs or small groups.
