Linguistic and ethnological analysis entails the representation of data at diverse levels: linguistic analysis, socio-historical, situation of language, and comments on the description (history of research and place of present description), and annotations.
In-field processing of the data entails the transcription and translation of the recorded data.
The audio-visual data are digitized and converted into audio WAV (MP3 for large files) and video MPEG1(MPEG2/4) files. The recorded speech is represented in a format that combines them with at least four annotation tiers: broad phonetic transcription, a morphophonemic tier, two free translation tiers (English and Spanish).
The screen shots below illustrate the process of transcribing in the field, and the results. The second screen shot shows a typical page in the Transcriber window, after a transcription has been entered. The third screen shot shows the linguistic analysis of the transcribed line in Shoebox.
