2018 Novella Prize Winner:
Samantha Jade Macpherson

Samantha MacphersonThe Malahat Review congratulates Samantha Jade Macpherson of Lake Country, BC, whose story "Tattoo" has won the 2018 Novella Prize!

Macpherson’s entry was chosen from 144 submissions by our three final judges: Jacqueline Baker, Eliza Roberston, and Richard Van Camp. She has been awarded $1,500 in prize money, and her novella will be published in the Summer 2018 issue of The Malahat Review.

Of "Tattoo," the judges said: This is an unforgettable and wounding story, told with impressive economy. It feels fresh and contemporary, but still engages with the traditional novella form. One of the judges wrote, "I am in soul awe of this story." "Tattoo" deserves to be celebrated and mourned, as it demonstrates so elegantly how fragile life truly is. Bravo!

Samantha Jade Macpherson is based in the Okanagan Valley. Her work has been published in Ricepaper Magazine and This Side of West. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Victoria, and in the fall she will move to the USA to study fiction at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop.
