THE INQUEST cont.

Witness #6: Miss Effie Stone, a fellow prostitute at the brothel.

"I have heard the evidence of Della Wentworth and it is true, there is nothing that I can add to it."

Witness # 7: Miss Dot Gilbert, a fellow prostitute at the brothel.

" I heard a shot, and called out. I then heard a fall, and I said, "I guess Edna has shot herself." I was at the back door. I ran up the hall, looking. Edna's door was open and she was lying on the floor. I ran back and told them she had shot herself, and then went back to Edna. I raised her head up and placed some towels under it. The blood kept rushing out of her nose and mouth. She was gasping. I kept wiping the blood from her nose and mouth, thinking she would speak. I called her name, but she could not speak. Miss Della came in in the meanwhile. When she saw what had happened, she fell over Edna and fainted. I told someone to get Dr. Helmcken, because he had attended her in her last illness."

"I recognized the pistol as one that Edna had. When I saw it she [Edna] said "don't tell Della-no please don't tell Della." I cannot see any cause for the act. She was perfectly happy."

Witness #8: Almond Thomas, Police Constable. He would later become a jailor at the provincial jail.

Went over and met Miss Della Wentworth at the door. She said the woman was dead. I went in and found Drs. Milne and Helmecken in the house and the three ladies, inmates of the home and Mr. Croft. Went into the room where the dead woman lay…there was considerable blood on the hearthrug in front of the bureau. Dr. Milne produced a pistol with one chamber discharged, told me to take charge of that and the body. I remained there until 8 o'clock…" [Link to "The Media 'Frenzy"]
