The Edges of Time: Cornerstones and Time Capsules of Early Victoria

The Edges of Time: Cornerstones and Time Capsules of Early Victoria - Introduction

Everyone aspires to leave their mark on the world. Be it a well-placed footprint in the sand before the tide comes in, or a glittering star in the pavement on Hollywood Boulevard, we leave small pieces of ourselves behind and hope that someone, someday, remembers.

The Edges of Time: Cornerstones and Time Capsules of Early Victoria allows us to remember the forgotten secrets and ceremonies of a coastal city. In showcasing the cornerstones of some of British Columbia’s earliest colonial structures, we ask what hides behind and beneath the prominent foundation of influence that we see reflected in each of the eight buildings featured here. Reconstructing the ceremony of cornerstones engenders a critical glimpse of colonial culture, society, and success during the reign of Queen Victoria. Discovering which items were contained in the foundation time capsules allows us to ponder how some of Victoria’s citizens identified themselves in a new land. It is our hope that a careful exploration of this website reveals the historic significance of cracked pavement and broken brick. May your eyes be compelled to scour the sidewalks as your feet carry you forward.
