German-born Joseph Loewen came to America in search of quick
money. Prior to arriving in Victoria in 1858, he took part in the San
Francisco gold rush and operated a distilling plant in California. In
1870, he had accumulated enough capital to become a co-owner of the
Victoria Brewing Company with
partner Ludwig Erb.
