Chapter 6

usare il passasto remoto dove necessario

1. A long time ago I had to do research in Africa for two years. While I was living on (in) that beautiful continent, I felt very alone. The isolation came from the inability to communicate because I did not know the language.

2. I wrote to my girlfriend and asked her to come to live with me in Kenya. She tried to convince me to return to Italy, but I had not yet learned everything. She decided to join me, and we were married the following month.

3. We tried to adapt to the customs of the people, but it was a very slow process and ours was not a long stay. For this very reason, we frequented a high school in our city to try to learn the language faster. It took us a long time.

4. We met a wonderful teacher, a Jewish woman who had lived there for many years. She had arrived twenty years before and had never gone away! She had managed to understand the people and their habits.

5. She helped us a lot and she taught us to manage well in this new country! We counted oon her a lot during our stay and she explained the new laws to us. She explained them to us clearly and she didn't take offense when we didn't understand something (that) she was saying.

6. Finally, I succeeded in finishing my work. It took me twenty-two months to complete it! I wrote an article and a very important magazine published it for me. I even sent the article to our old friend, the teacher. I sent it to her last year and she was very pleased!
