Psychology 589: Introduction to Evidence-Based Adult Psychotherapy — restricted to graduate students admitted to the Clinical Psychology Program

This course is an introduction to both the theory and practice of psychotherapy with adults; it introduces the student to the aims, goals, and techniques involved in a variety of psychotherapeutic approaches, reviews the psychotherapy outcome literature, and addresses some of the issues and problems that the practising clinician may encounter. There is also an important applied focus to this course; students participate in a series of in-class exercises and role-plays throughout the term that provides them with an opportunity to practice specific therapeutic skills and techniques (e.g., listening, empathic responding, etc.). Practical emphasis will be on learning the client-centred approach to psychotherapy that is exemplified by David Martin’s “Evocative Empathy” approach.
