This block plan is an outline of a progression of lessons for the unit.


1 – Introductory Activity: Yoga poses

Educational Themes: shape, balance, & weight transfer.

3 tasks

•Students spot their partners as they balance (e.g., handstand, headstand)

•Introduction to front and back support

•Introduction to shoulder balances

Culminating Activity: Create shapes with body in partners or small groups. Maintain balance consistently while creating shapes with body.

2 – Introductory Activity: Crows & Cranes

Educational Themes: travel, flight, take off and land

3 tasks

•Run and jump

•Two-foot stop (at conclusion of locomotor movement)

•Run, jump, slide

Culminating Activity: Create a sequence with a partner using run, jump, and slide

3 – Introductory Activity: Frozen tag

Educational Themes: Spatial awareness

3 tasks

•Run to open space (jump & slide)

•Practice balances

•Run, jump, slide balance

Culminating Activity: Create a sequence with a partner using run, jump, slide, and balance

4 – Introductory Activity:  Stretching (Flexibility)

Motor Skills/Theme:  Acrobatic, tumbling, balancing

3 tasks 

•Introduction to forward roll

•Introduction to backward roll

•Introduction to cartwheel

Culminating Activity: Perform a series of rolls and/ or cartwheels (mats and wedges may be used)

Unit Objectives:

Active Lifestyle

•Participate daily (e.g. five times a week) in a variety of moderate to vigorous physical activities that support their personal physical activity goals

Movement

•Apply learned movement skills in new and unfamiliar physical activities

•Perform sequences using learned non-locomotor, locomotor, and manipulative movement skills, demonstrating effective use of qualities of movement (e.g. speed, force, flow)

Personal & Social responsibility

•Apply safe procedures for specific physical activities

•Model leadership in creating a positive climate for physical activity (e.g. mentoring, organizing, coaching)
