CREATING SPACE TO RECEIVE BALL

Tactical Problem: Getting into a position to receive ball
Skill development: Head / Body fakes.
                               Quick changes in direction.

Teaching Points: Receiver

Tactic

  • Change of pace and direction.
  • Fake to get defender moving in wrong direction.
Skill
  • Communication between passer and receiver so that pass is successful.
  • Vary passing patterns so that defender doesn't know where the pass is going.
  • Fake one way, go the other.
  • Receiver makes target for passer with hands.
  • When catching the ball, cushion it into arms.
Organizational Points
  • Start with the basic fake patterns- J route, hook, button.
  • Give students time to plan attack.
  • Start with defenders shadowing receivers, not making an attempt at the ball
  • Let students design their own plays.
  • Keep playing field wide and short to increase success.
Extensions:
  • Change playing field to pressure passer and receiver.
  • Defenders can start playing slightly more aggressive once passes are consistently successful.
