BLOCK PLAN - Four Lesson Flag Football Unit 

The block plan is an outline of a potential progression for the unit.  Depending on the response of students this progression could be adapted.

Lesson 1
Tactical Problem
Controlling the Football.
Lesson focus:  Proper handling methods of the football.
Skill objective: How to catch, throw and handle a 
                       football correctly.  Basic defensive 
                       skills.

Introductory task/game

 Partner hand-off- random pass

Skill/Concept development tasks/games

               3 v1- hand-off / pass option

Culminating Game: FOCUS:  Passing

  • 3 v 2 small square playing area.

  •   -Passing game - two steps only with ball.  Pass
       across a line to score.
      -Focus is on passing, catching, positioning, and
       basic defending.
      -Switch up defenders after every 2 points 
       scored.
 
Lesson 2
Tactical Problem
 Keeping possession of the ball.
Lesson focus: Reception positioning.

Skill objective: Positioning away from defender to 
                       receive a pass. 
                       Increase defending and guarding skills.

Introductory task/game

Piggy in the middle - keep away

Skill/Concept development tasks/games

Basic route plays and Route development

Culminating Game: FOCUS:  Receiving

  • 4 v 4 medium sized square playing area.

  •    -Offenders must get open to space to receive
         a pass. 
        -5 complete passes is a point for the passing 
          team. 
        -After a point is awarded, other team gets the 
          ball.
        -Interceptions also turn ball over to other 
          team.


Lesson 3
Tactical Problem
Minimizing Opponent's Field Space
Lesson focus: Marking opponent and pressuring ball
                     carrier.

Skill objective: Understand the need to mark players
                       and pressure the ball to defend space.

Skill/Concept development tasks/games

Pressure Passing and Receiving

Culminating Game: FOCUS: Guarding and Ability to score while being guarded.

  • 4 v 4 - Running football game

  • -Points are scored by running a touch down.
    -Skills practiced are passing, catching, and
      running the ball. 
    -Guarding is also an important part of this game.
Lesson 4
Tactical Problem
Clearing Defensive zone
Lesson focus: Punting.

Skill objective: Punt technique.  Quick use of the punt 
                       to clear defensive zone.

Introductory task/game

500 hundred up- punting / catching game

Skill/Concept development tasks/games

Base Football

Culminating Game: FOCUS: Putting all of the basic football skills together, and playing a modified full flag football game.

  • 6 v 6 - Regular flag football game.

  •      -Modified field - smaller - to accommodate 
           smaller teams.
         -Smaller teams ensure that all students
           get a chance to actively participate in the
           game.
         -All previously learned football skills, and 
           now incorporate the punt into the game
           situation.
